Major dental waiting period

A dental benefits waiting period may last anywhere from a few months to a full year, depending on the type of plan you have purchased and the insurance benefits wording. Basic restorative procedures require a six-month wait. Major restorative services have a wait time of one year. However, Cigna waives the waiting periods if you present acceptable proof of previous dental insurance.

If you receive a major service prior to fulfilling its applicable waiting perio you will be responsible for the entire bill for that service. There are no waiting periods for Preventive, Basic or Major services on the Spirit Dental plans.


However, if you select a plan with Orthodontia services you may fin depending upon your state of residence, a waiting period on this service. Dental insurance without waiting periods for major services feature lots of fine print. Read the policy language carefully if you are seeking instant coverage for crowns, dentures, implants, or root canals. Be on the lookout for graded benefits or exclusions for pre-existing conditions such as a missing tooth. During the waiting perio you pay out of pocket for dental care.


If you had a qualified dental insurance plan in place for at least consecutive months before you joined Cigna, we will waive the waiting period for restorative care, so you can get that filling or root canal right away. Otherwise, there is a waiting period of months for basic restorative services or months for major restorative services. It is common for health insurers to apply a two-month waiting period before you can claim for general dental care. If you need dental surgery or more expensive work then the waiting period tends to be longer. Typically, there’s a 12-month waiting period before you can use your major dental treatment benefits.


If you need a major dental service in the near future, you want a dental plan that starts right away. Full coverage dental insurance with no waiting period means that you would encounter no waiting period for an array of services, including major dental procedures. Other plans may require a month waiting period.
